Frequently Asked Questions
What is MshaScan?
MshaScan is a free platform that provides searchable mine safety records for every US mine. We aggregate violations, accidents, inspections, and penalty data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
Where does this data come from?
All data comes from MSHA Open Government Data, published by the US Department of Labor. It is public domain and updated weekly.
How often is the data updated?
MSHA updates their datasets every Friday. MshaScan downloads and processes the updated data every Saturday morning.
What is an S&S violation?
An S&S (Significant and Substantial) violation is one that MSHA has determined is reasonably likely to result in a reasonably serious injury or illness. S&S violations carry higher penalties.
